Summer in North Shore Lake Tahoe With Kids

Having spent decades traversing the mountain roads to Lake Tahoe, it's been an absolute joy to introduce my own children to its magic. While the entire lake is a wonderland, my heart (and most of my time) belongs to the North Shore, particularly the vibrant town of Truckee and the Tahoe Donner area.

Summer in Tahoe is a spectacular experience, offering a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and stunning natural beauty.

Here are some of my family's favorite spots and tips for making the most of your summer with kids on the North Shore:

Fueling Up: Breakfast & Lunch

  • Breakfast at Wild Cherries (Truckee): Start your day right with a visit to Wild Cherries. Pro tip: Grab your coffee and delicious breakfast sandwiches to-go, then snag one of the public piers on Donner Lake (first come, first served) for a serene breakfast with a view.

  • Breakfast at Jax on the Tracks (Truckee): A lively and popular diner right by the train tracks in downtown Truckee, offering classic breakfast fare in a fun, bustling atmosphere. Kids love watching the trains go by.

  • Lunch at Full Belly Deli (Truckee): For a satisfying and casual lunch, Full Belly Deli in Truckee is a local favorite with great sandwiches.

  • Lakeside Lunch at Sunnyside (Tahoe City): Head to Sunnyside on Lake Tahoe for a quintessential lakeside dining experience. The views are incredible, and it's a relaxed atmosphere perfect for families. (Shadyside is a Mexican restaurant right next door, usually quicker to get into, and is delightfully decorated. And if you can’t get into either, grab a sandwich from West Shore Market, also right there, and head to the beach for a picnic.)

Dinner

  • Moody's Bistro, Bar & Beats (Truckee): This is my all-time favorite dinner spot. It's family-friendly, but given the price point, I personally prefer to leave the kids with my parents or a sitter if possible and enjoy a date night here.

  • Pianetta (Truckee): Another excellent choice for a more upscale yet welcoming dinner in Truckee.

  • Pizza on the Hill (Tahoe Donner): Perfect for families! Kids can enjoy the playground while you relax in an Adirondack chair with a glass of wine and surprisingly good pizza. It's a fantastic spot for a casual, fun evening.

  • RMU (Truckee): Located downtown Truckee, RMU offers a fantastic deal on Sundays: Smashburger and fries for just $12 with a drink. The patio with cornhole games keeps the kids entertained while you enjoy your meal.

  • Mountain Valley Meats (Truckee): Great butcher (amazing sausages!)—perfect for a family BBQ.

Family-Friendly Hikes & Walks (Truckee & North Shore)

North Lake Tahoe and Truckee offer a variety of trails suitable for families, ranging from easy strolls to more adventurous treks.

  • Truckee River Legacy Trail (Truckee River Walk): An easy, paved multi-use path that follows the Truckee River. It's great for strollers, bikes, and a leisurely walk with plenty of river access and scenic views.

  • Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Loop (near Mt. Rose Summit): An easy, paved 1.3-mile loop that's great for strollers and young walkers. It meanders through beautiful meadows with interpretive signs.

  • Stateline Fire Lookout Trail (near Crystal Bay): A relatively flat, 1.2-mile roundtrip walk to an old fire lookout, offering incredible panoramic views of Lake Tahoe.

  • Donner Lake Rim Trail (various access points in Truckee): While a longer trail overall, you can access easy, flatter sections from various points around Donner Lake for a pleasant walk with lake views. The segment within Donner Memorial State Park (check for parking fees) offers beautiful views and access to public beaches and coves.

  • Sagehen Creek Trail (north of Truckee): A lush, forested 4.5-mile out-and-back trail along Sagehen Creek, winding through woods and wildflowers, eventually leading to a meadow and Stampede Reservoir. It's generally considered easy and offers a peaceful experience.

  • Shirley Canyon Trail (Palisades Tahoe/Olympic Valley): While the full trail is more challenging, you can hike a shorter, easier portion with kids up to the lower waterfalls for a beautiful and engaging experience.

  • Page Meadows Loop (near Tahoe City): A 5-mile loop with flat terrain, making it accessible for younger hikers. It offers beautiful views of the meadows and opportunities to spot wildlife.

Other Family Fun & Attractions

  • Truckee River Regional Park: This expansive park offers something for everyone, including multiple playgrounds, sports fields, picnic areas, and access to the Truckee River. It's a great spot to let kids burn off energy.

  • Truckee Children's Museum: A fantastic indoor option, especially for younger kids or on a rare rainy day. It offers hands-on exhibits and interactive play areas designed to spark curiosity and creativity.

  • Truckee Tahoe Airport Playground: A hidden gem for little ones! The public playground located at the Truckee private airport offers a unique experience. Kids can play while watching small planes and private jets take off and land – a big thrill for aviation enthusiasts!

Where to Stay

For families, Airbnb rentals are often the preferred choice, offering more space and amenities like kitchens.

  • Tahoe Donner Tip: If you're interested in staying in the highly family-friendly Tahoe Donner area, be sure to find an Airbnb that explicitly states it provides guest access to the amenities (like the pool or recreation center). Airbnb laws changed in the last few years, so not all Airbnbs will be able to grant you access.

  • Traffic Tip: Be aware that traffic can be quite bad around noon on check-out days when many people are leaving their Airbnbs. If possible, try to request a late check-out in advance, or plan to leave early to avoid congestion.

Shopping

  • Jack and Emmy: Super cute kids' store in Truckee; they often have sidewalk sales so walk by and check.

  • Kalifornia Jean Bar: Pricey but really well-curated boutique (women's with a couple racks of men's).

  • Truckee Bookshop: A fantastic local independent bookstore.

Other Services & Local Favorites

  • Brianna at Whole Roots Health (Acupuncture): If you're looking for a fantastic acupuncturist in the area, Brianna at Whole Roots Health is wonderful.

  • Mountain Valley Meats: For those planning to grill, Mountain Valley Meats offers amazing sausages – perfect for a family BBQ.

Must-Visit North Lake Tahoe Beaches

  • Kings Beach State Recreation Area: A wide, sandy shore with shallow waters, ideal for kids. It also features a playground, picnic areas, and offers kayak and paddleboard rentals.

  • Sand Harbor State Park: Famous for its stunningly clear turquoise water and unique granite boulders. It's incredibly popular, so arrive early to secure parking, especially on weekends! It has restrooms and a cafe.

  • Commons Beach (Tahoe City): This beach is a hub of family activity, offering a large playground, grassy areas, and often hosts free summer concerts and outdoor movie screenings, making it a lively evening spot.
